Types of Student Visas for Germany

  • German Student Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken)
    For students who have received admission to a German university. This visa is valid for the duration of the study program (typically one year) and can be extended depending on the course length.

  • Student Applicant Visa (Visum zur Studienbewerbung)
    For students who have not yet been admitted to a university. This visa allows you to stay in Germany for up to six months to finalize admission or attend preparatory language courses.

Step-by-Step Application Procedure

1. Choose Your Program and University

Select the degree level (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) and your preferred university in Germany.

2. Check Admission Requirements

Ensure you meet eligibility criteria, including:

  • Academic qualifications

  • Language proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programs)

3. Prepare Application Documents

Gather the following:

  • Valid passport

  • High school diploma or degree certificate

  • Language proficiency proof (IELTS/TOEFL)

  • CV / Resume

  • Motivation letter

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Academic transcripts

  • Passport-sized photos

  • Proof of financial support (approx. €11,208/year)

  • Health insurance proof

4. Submit Your Application

Apply via Uni-Assist or directly through the university portal.
Application deadlines:

  • Winter Semester (starts October)

    • EU applicants: May 15

    • Non-EU applicants: July 15

  • Summer Semester (starts April)

    • Non-EU applicants: November 15

5. Wait for Admission Decision

After submission, wait for evaluation and potential interviews. If accepted, you’ll receive an admission letter.

6. Apply for a Student Visa

Once admitted, apply for the German Student Visa.
Required documents:

  • Valid passport

  • Admission letter

  • Proof of financial support

  • Health insurance

  • Proof of accommodation

  • Visa fee: €75–€100

Processing time: 6–12 weeks

7. Apply for a Residence Permit

Upon arrival in Germany (for stays over 90 days), apply for a residence permit.
Required documents:

  • Passport with student visa

  • Admission letter

  • Proof of financial means

  • Health insurance

  • Proof of accommodation

Valid for 1 year, renewable annually

8. Arrival and Local Registration

Register your address with the local authorities (Bürgeramt) within 14 days of arrival and confirm your health insurance.

9. Start Your Studies

Once all formalities are completed, enroll at the university and begin your studies.
